How to Calculate Reefer Fuel Costs
Calculating your reefer expense requires estimating the total hours the unit will run, not just the miles driven. The logic is straightforward:
Total Run Time = (Trip Distance ÷ Avg Speed) + Dock Wait Time
Total Fuel Cost = Total Run Time × Hourly Burn Rate × Diesel Price
For example, if you have a 1,100-mile trip at an average of 55 MPH, your transit time is 20 hours. If you wait 4 hours at the shipper and receiver, your reefer runs for 24 hours. At a burn rate of 0.9 gallons per hour and a fuel price of $3.50, your reefer will cost you $75.60 for that specific load.
Continuous Mode vs. Cycle-Sentry (Start-Stop)
Your fuel consumption heavily depends on the commodity you are hauling and the required temperature setting.
- Continuous Mode (0.8 - 1.2 gal/hr): Used for sensitive produce (like berries or leafy greens) and ice cream. The engine never shuts off to ensure consistent airflow and strict temperature control. This mode burns the most fuel.
- Cycle-Sentry / Start-Stop Mode (0.3 - 0.6 gal/hr): Used for deeply frozen goods (like frozen meat) where slight temperature variances are acceptable. The engine shuts off when the target temperature is reached and restarts only when it drops. This mode saves significant fuel but relies heavily on the trailer's insulation quality.
Other Factors That Affect Reefer Fuel Consumption
Operating mode explains most of the variance in reefer fuel burn, but a few other factors move the number too:
- Ambient temperature: hauling frozen goods in July desert heat demands far more compressor run time than the same load in January
- Trailer insulation quality: an older trailer with degraded insulation forces the reefer to work harder, and burn more fuel, to hold the same setpoint
- Door openings during loading and unloading: every time the doors open on a multi-stop delivery, cold air escapes and the unit has to recover, which adds up over a full route
- Preventive maintenance: a reefer unit with a dirty condenser, low refrigerant, or a worn compressor burns noticeably more diesel to do the same job
